Know You're Doing It Right!

This multi-day, in-shop learning experience is your best opportunity to know you're doing each and every step right. Sit side by side with me as we go over every aspect of school-based repairs. 

What's the benefit of Hands-On?

Confidence

You'll know you can fix the issues when you need to fix them. You'll successfully repair a LOT of real-life issues.

  • Side-by-side training. You and I will work shoulder to shoulder repairing instruments for three days.

  • Lots of Repaired Instruments. Doing it once is nice, but you'll fix lots of problems during this course so you know you can do it right.

What will you learn at Hands-on?

You will focus on the mechanics of the instrument so you can discover how every part is inter-related. Then we'll "install" problems on the instruments so you can fix them time and again. You'll know what you can address yourself and what may be best left to a professional shop.

Curiculum

WHAT EACH DAY HOLDS

During your 3 days you'll pick up a lot more than this but here's the basics

Day 1

Band: Case repair, Key Geometry, Feeler Gauge build and use, Screws & Rods, padding overview

 

Orchestra: Case repair, Peg shaping/fitting, Nut carving and shaping

 

Guitar: Tuning heads, nut shaping, fret tangs, fingerboard adjustments, hydration

Day 2

Band: Changing pads, Regulating Clarinets, Regulating Flutes, Regulating Saxophones

 

Orchestra: Fingerboard cracks / shaping / separtations, Tailpiece, Bows

 

Guitar: Saddle heights, intonation setting, Buzzing frets, cracks, electronics overview, classical re-strings

Day 3

Band: Valve Problems, Trombone Hand slides, Rotors, Waterkeys

 

Orchestra: Bridge reshape / carving / tuning, Cracks, Soundpost adjustment

 

Guitar is only a two day course. 

Extras

You'll experiment with different tools, get access to the Emergency Repair Guide and bask in my glowing presence for three days... Lunches are on me and one evening dinner and I'd be delighted to show you around the area!

If you've never worked on an instrument before, you're still welcome in this class. I'll walk you through every step, show you how it done and then oversee you doing the work yourself so you know you're doing it right. 

 

That being said, if you've taken my online course first, you will get more out of the Hands-On experience as you'll be asking better questions and be coming at it with a broad knowledge base...but it's not necessary. Come as you are and I'll help you discover the skill necessary to repair your own instruments.
